This injured downy woodpecker (look at his leg, you can see the blood a little–don’t worry, he’s fine, now!) spent several hours one afternoon recuperating on the railing of my porch.
Downy woodpeckers are about 6.5″ long. The woodpecker pictured above is a male; the female (below) doesn’t have the red spot on her head.
Downy woodpeckers slightly resemble hairy woodpeckers in the black and white markings on their wings, but the markings on hairy woodpeckers are less distinct because they have more grey coloring.
