Dark Eyed Junco, Slate-Colored Subspecies

There are two subspecies of Dark Eyed Juncos in Alaska, this is the Slate-Colored Subspecies (the Oregon Subspecies is not pictured).

The Dark Eyed Junco get t its dark-colored head as well as its dark eyes. This female is about 5″ long. She has a pink bill and pale colored feet and belly. Her wings have brown-ish gray feathers with darker brown on the tips. (A male would have a much darker head, giving him a hooded appearance.)

You can see the darker brown on the edges of the wing, here.

This lovely female was very shy and only hung around for a few minutes after she noticed my presence. I’m sad to say that I have not seen her since and I never did see a male or any juveniles.
